Canada's Economic Action Plan invested $75 million over two years to establish the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund. The goal was to support short-term, focused initiatives designed to help Aboriginal people get the specific skills they require to secure work within the trade industry.
Economic Action Plan funding enabled the Saskatchewan Indian Training Assessment Group to deliver training-to-employment programs across Saskatchewan, helping Aboriginals learn a variety of skills and gain meaningful employment within their communities. Participants defied many pre-existing employment barriers and found immediate employment.
The Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund has directly improved First Nations participation in the Canadian workforce and has contributed to the completion of many key infrastructure projects across Canada.
