Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government is stimulating the economy through investments in cultural infrastructure by covering certain infrastructure costs of community cultural and heritage institutions. The government is providing a $60 million investment over two years.
The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund aims to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. It also seeks to increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, as well as to museum collections and heritage exhibitions. The program supports the improvement, renovation and construction of arts and heritage facilities, the purchase of specialized equipment, and the conduct of feasibility studies. Applicants must identify other public or private sources to complete the financing package.
Projects that best meet program objectives are selected through a two-stage process. The first part involves a regional analysis to prioritize projects based on assessment criteria and program objectives. Projects are then submitted to a National Review Committee that evaluates them in the context of regional and national strategies that consider the distribution of program investments across the country, including the national needs of under-served artistic disciplines, communities and groups.
Not-for-profit arts and heritage organizations, provincial, territorial, municipal and regional governments and their agencies, as well as First Nations and Inuit equivalent governments are eligible. Federal agencies and Crown corporations are not eligible for funding.
Applicants must have a clear artistic or heritage focus in their vision or mandate that is reflected in their letters patent, their by-laws and/or other governance documents.

Funding commitments have been made for many projects in communities across Canada and, as a result, the majority of funding for the two years is now allocated.
